Dear Family,
What a lovely week we had together revisiting our class norms, rediscovering our routines and celebrating acts of kindness. We are well on our way to collecting 100 acts of kindness by Valentine’s Day, the day we celebrate friendships. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner (Tuesday, Feb. 14th). Enclosed in your child’s Friday Folder is a class list. But, a more useful tool, is a copy of our classmates’ pictures. Your child may want to cut up those pictures to attach to his/her Valentine (instead of writing each classmate’s name on a Valentine) for each of his/her classmates. Handwriting is a laborious task when you are young. If your student chooses to write their classmates’ name start soon. Five a day. Or use the pictures. No name needed! Or, just have your child sign their own name on each card. No assigned name. Differentiate for your child! And, keeping with TTUSD’s Wellness Policy, candy-free Valentines are preferred! This month with heavy snow and power outages has certainly brought a unique situation to TTUSD and our school calendar. Dr. Leri (superintendent) is working diligently, exploring some “out of the box” ideas, to resolve how we will make up 10 (and possibly more) snow days without just adding them onto the end of the school year. The district has applied to the state to have 5 days waived under the “state of emergency” laws. Permission still pending. Two of the snow days will be included in the days that we banked for make up snow days at the end of our year in June. And the other 3 days, you as a parent, have some choices on how to make those days up. Ski Skate Week is Feb. 20th-24th. One Choice: On Wednesday, 22nd, Thursday, 23rd, and Friday, 24th TTUSD schools will be open for students who would like to attend. Most likely, grade levels will be combined with one teacher (substitute) to lead a class in instruction. It promises to be a “camp” like atmosphere. 2nd Choice (my preference): I will be working with my team to create an Independent Study (contract) for students who would like to complete work at home. Your child would still be counted as attending school that day. 3rd Choice: Unexcused absence. Your child doesn’t complete an Independent Study. More detailed information will be coming to you from Dr. Leri on these choices on how to address three of the snow days over Ski-Skate break. I am proud to be part of a public organization that is trying to be progressive in providing options to families to resolve this unique situation. Also, all minimum days have been cancelled to provide more instructional minutes. And, sadly, field trips not related to curriculum or standards, have also been cancelled. (Yikes!) This includes our Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski field trips. Enjoy the sunshine this weekend! Onward, Taylor Strong
