Dear family,
I want to start this letter off by letting all of you know how wonderful your children have been during our week of focus on feelings, emotions and empathy. I know I say this a lot, but this class is AMAZING! They are the reason I absolutely love my job. I am learning so much from them each and every day. I have all of you to thank, so thank you! With Valentine’s Day next Tuesday we focused our studies on the meaning of the holiday. We learned how to write valentines and made some for our friends and family. The kids learned how to read, write, count and sort conversation hearts. We discussed ways that we can show our love to our families and our appreciation to our friends. They are learning to pay attention to a person's body language and facial expressions to see how they are feeling. We are learning how to respond as a kind, caring person. They have all been exceptionally sweet to each other as they practice what they are learning about empathy. Tuesday we will be celebrating friendships. The children love to pass out their Valentines to each of their classmates. It’s a beautiful thing, truly! We have almost reached our goal of 100 Acts of Kindness! The kids have been so sweet and helpful to one another. Thank you parents for playing a huge role in this! Next week, we will be studying American Symbols as historians do including George Washington and Abe Lincoln’s special stories. Read, read, read! That is what my students are practicing this week with our daily Read to Self time, Guided Reading with me, Daily Book Bag reading with you and whole group instruction with our Daily Message, Anchor Charts, and Shared Literature. Our Morning Work is centered around Word Work including reading, writing, and spelling sight words, CVC words and handwriting practice. This 30 minute block also provides the students time to practice working independently which is a “must” skill for first graders. Please continue to honor the book bag daily reading at home. As we chant everyday, “The more we read, the better we read, so read, read, read, read, read!”. MORE INFO COMING IN AN EMAIL REGARDING SKI SKATE WEEK, MAKE UP DAYS AND INDEPENDENT STUDY CHOICE. I have 10 students that are completing an Independent Study and 12 students attending make up days that week. Thankful for blue sky, Taylor
