We had a very busy week this week! One of our many community partners, SWEP, hosted two different opportunities to explore science at Glenshire Elementary. On Thursday, the children enjoyed multiple experiments to understand and practice the scientific process. Using academic language, our young scientists identified the steps to explore a hypothesis and then, thru the procedure, tested their question. On Thursday, Family Science Night brought many families to the gym, to continue to explore more science questions. In class this week, our studies of Animals Two By Two, was the perfect background to continue our studies of isopods. The children are using many newly learned writing skills to report observations in their Science Notebooks. Next week, we will begin our studies of oviparous animals focusing on the life cycle of the chick. We have 18 eggs in our Mother Hen (incubator). Hopefully, we will hear the chicks start hatching in about 12 days. The eggs and incubator come from a 4-H farm in Auburn. That is where we will return the chicks at the end of May. The next fun night at GES is on May, 22. That is the night of Open House/Science Fair/Book Fair AND our classroom performance in C-6. We will have a 20 minute performance (short plays) in our room beginning promptly at 5:30 PM. For the science fair the students are invited to plan, prepare, and explain a science experiment using the scientific process. We are doing 2 projects in class using the process (question, hypothesis, material list, procedure, ets.). If your child would like to do a science project at home and bring it to school on the 22nd, that would be wonderful. THIS IS NOT MANDATORY, PURELY OPTIONAL. Our class will be introduced to these ideas in a developmentally appropriate way through some great hands-on science activities. Happy weekend, Taylor REMINDER DATES: May 7: Early Release 12:45 May 9: Science Field Trip + Spring Fever for Parents May 22: Open House 5:30 PM sharp for class play in C-6 June 12: Beach Day at Donner Lake (more information coming) June 13: Last Day/ Carnival Day/ Early Release
